Animal Portraits

I started doing some portraits last year, but I did the animals that I ended up not choosing for the final collection this year, but it did teach me a lot about drawing fur and getting eyes to look realistic, so I thought as a good starting point, I would like to do this portraits, as I feel like if I left them any later, I would talk myself out of using the amount of time needed for them.

Hedgehog

I began with a hedgehog, which I was enjoying doing until I got to the spikes, looking at my reference pictures realising they are very white. I managed to get a method to doing this, drawing a white line then coming in with the dark around it, then adding a gradient below it into the white end of the spike. I think these turned out okay, I would probably make them thinner next time, they look a little chunky at the ends, but I think this could be fixed digitally as well. I like the face, I think I got a lot of life into ht eyes and movement in the fur, I followed a reference picture carefully when looking at the direction of the fur.

Red Squirrel

I next tried a Red Squirrel, obviously the colouring was important in this one and I like again the movement of the fur in the tail. I forgot to add the whiskers and the ear tufts before taking the photo, but these will be added before I do anything else to them.

European Hare

The hare was quite difficult, the view I choose I thought would work well for a portrait, however it is a strange view to see a hare at, so maybe looking more into angles and things I could do a better one of these. The end does cut off quite suddenly too, so I think I would like to add some florals and leaves to hide this, probably digitally, to make it quite a pretty arrangement that would look good as a placement print. I want to get these printed with fashion formula, so this will be important to get done soon as I think the delivery times will be increased with the restrictions at the moment.

Dormouse

Finally the Hazel Dormouse, just known as the Dormouse in the UK as it is the only native species, done here with one of its young. I used prismacolours to complete all of these and watercolour behind some of them if there was going to be a lot of dark colours in one place, so I was not working directly onto white. The pencils are lovely because they soften and produce quite a thick result, which is great for getting solid colour and blending them together nicely. I also produced a video time-lapse of some of this drawing, showing the way I build up colour and blend to get a more realistic effect to the work.

Time-lapse of the Dormouse drawing

I am happy with the result of these and the plan is to print them onto fabric and add some stitching to them, I think this could make them more of a graphic outcome on fabric, but I do need to take it digital first and edit it. Like adding some plants to hide cut off lines and avoid just a floating animal, and in the case of the dormice here, making sure the leaf hanging here is complete so it works as a placement piece.

Research in my Own Garden

Living in the countryside has its perks, one of which being the large garden we have, full of a variety of different plants, trees and even wildlife. I spent some time walking around slowly, down every hedgerow and round every tree, seeing what different plants I could find that I had not seen before, that would suit my research.

My garden provided a lot of different varieties of plants and flowers as well, and plenty of blossom on the tress, it is a good time to be taking photos now I think especially with the good weather as well. I plan to use these in my book to create some interesting experiments from it.

Local Roadsides

Bringing my research back up to the present, with the current restrictions I cannot go far, but what I do regularly is go to a local farm to collect eggs from the box outside the gate, so I took some photos here and on the way back.

I found a good variety of plants on the roadside, a number of different wild flowers and plants, all of which are very different and I think would look good as motifs in the patterns. I think this is something that would work well especially with the ferns and larger leaves. These will be good reference photos to use for some mark-making in my sketchbook.

Llyn Llech Owain

The Llyn is such a nice place and has quite a mixture of shadowy woodlands and open fields, a pretty good environment for any of the species I am looking into. I think the images I found were good and the right kind of plants that I wanted, such as the long ones. I think these are good reference images for getting the shape and form right too.

Forestries and Mountains

The images above show my little walk through the forestry, the mushrooms were the best part as I have not seen these anywhere else, I may have to do some secondary research for these as well to get a more varied idea of shapes, sizes and colours. I think this trip was very useful because it took away from home, and at the right time of year too because I managed to get photos of nuts as well which is very useful for some of the species diets. As well as interesting berries and branches, this trip was useful, and I would like to try and visit again to one that is closer to home due to the restrictions, there is one a couple of miles away I think I could walk or cycle too on a nice day.

We went for a drive up into the black mountains, where there is seemingly nothing for miles on end, but I always think this is such a nice place because it is so high up. We also stopped nearly at the bottom to take the rest of the photos when we spotted the growths on the trees and then found the interesting casings growing onto it.

Dinas Rock and Local Rivers

Dinas rock is not far away from my home, I was able to go here last summer and collect photos for research for this module.

Dinas is the supposed hiding place of Welsh Folklore legend Twm Sion Cati, described as the Welsh Robin Hood. I have never made it all the way up to the cave before but managed to do this this time, and got to see the inside of it, covered in old lettering from many many visitors before me. These photos show a lot of different plants and leaves that I found along the journey.

I also took some videos, I thought this would be useful to help me have more of an idea of what an animal may experience, the sights and sounds of this forest area.

Walking through Dinas
Capturing the sight and sound of the river
Another walk along a path

These videos do show the noises quite well, the river in the background mostly and the rustling of the leaves. It would have been quite cool to have a monitor showing my videos as a display with my end of degree show I think too.

Driving a little further away and finding these woodland, riverside walks were really nice, I found a lot of the type of research that I wanted to as well, rocks and riversides are very relevant to the woodland theme too as the two can go together very often.

Previous Research Trips

Before restrictions on movements started, I did actually attend a few research trips at different times in the year, having thought about this module for a couple of years, always knowing this was the theme I was going to do.

Aberaeron

I took a trip to Aberaeron last year, and I kept the idea in mind that I may be looking into Puffins when I went, and took some research photos for this. Now that I am not doing the Puffin or other coastal creatures, these photos will probably not help me too much right now, but the possibility of expanding the collection is still there now.

I went with a few friends, we went crabbing and paddling, and also climbed the rocks a fair way out during low tide to see dolphins, and where the rocks were usually covered in water, the algae and growth on them was nice and I thought would make good research for texture.

The range of texture on the different rocks was so vast literally just on the same beach, I thought this was interesting and the photos came out quite clear and well.

I even managed to catch a few crabs, one of the smaller ones here seen in my hand, they remind me too much of spiders to touch the bigger ones, with the added risk that they do actually pinch with their claws. This small one was calm and just settled in my hand, allowing me to get some nice photos of it, something here I suspect was in the Puffin food group.

Brecon Beacons Lake

I stopped by the side of this lake in my car, I always drive past and never really stop because it can be quite a busy road. I only took a few photos but I thought this was interesting enough as a landscape. I like the bush and the grass in the bottom two images, I thought these were quite good research pictures to work from.

Cardigan

I always used to holiday in Cardigan nearly every year, it is not that far from Aberaeron but it has a farm park, beaches, and a lot of walks. I went up for the day with my boyfriend to meet my family who were on holidays there, so we spent some time taking a few photos as well.

We visited quite a few places through the day and got some photos in each place, I would have probably spent more time in Cenarth by the river getting exactly what kind of photos I wanted of the close up flora there.

Shop Research

I walked past this giftshop in Cenarth and took a couple of photos of some things that caught my eye there. These cushions featured a couple of animals that I was also looking at, which I think have turned out very cute and suitable for a gift for someone. The slogans are quite clever but not really something I would be going for in my own work.

‘Endangered in our Woodlands’ Moodboards

The moodboards are an important part of the process as they should reflect the module and the work I am aiming to complete. For this module, I have done a theme board, a colour board, a customer profile and a competitors board.

Theme Board for new theme ‘Endangered in our Woodlands’

The theme here shows the final four woodland creatures I decided on for focus in my collection, after a lot of research narrowing down the animals. I thought these four are reflective of what I want to achieve in this module, raising awareness through my designs and forming a start to what would be a much larger collection in the future, if I was to expand into other endangered or declining animal species. I live very rural in Mid Wales, hedgehogs are well-known in the garden and we are in the buffer zone for the Mid Wales Red Squirrel’s project, meaning greys are controlled in the area to keep them out of the safe Red Squirrel zone. I also see hares if I venture towards the mountains a little, with the restrictions at the minute I cannot go far, but I do go up that way looking for eggs instead of going to a shop. The Dormouse is the only one that I have not had a personal link to, although where I used to live, near Pontypridd, in recent years had a new bypass built through a countryside area, little bridges were built across the road, costing thousands. They are designed for Dormice to get about cross the new roads safely as they prefer to stay up in the trees anyway.

My theme board also represents the woodland area they live in, as well as some of the plants and things that inspired me. I think it’s important to include some of the habitat, the things they eat and the things they encounter on a daily basis as this could also educate what plants and things could help encourage them in your own garden.

Colour Board

The colour board is an idea of the colours I want to use, a lot of them will be more natural based on the colouring of the animals, which will be a range of browns, oranges and creams, as well as the greens and pinks inspired by leaves and berries. I thought the texture of the animals is interesting too, the hedgehog is totally different to the hare, and with the leaves, the texture of them as a collective is different to the texture of the veins on an individual one. These colours need to be experimented with in my drawing books, making sure the creatures can contrast with the rest of the motifs enough too.

Customer Profile Board

The customer profile describes the idea of the person I am aiming this collection at, the idea is a young professional, around 30 – 35 years old and female, with a steady job, who enjoys the countryside and may be familiar with some of these creatures. The profile also describes an artistic person, working in a creative related job, who enjoys gardening and fitness in her spare time. I imagine my customer would have disposable income, so the types of products I want to produce would be something they would buy for themselves or as gifts for friends, as giftware and lifestyle is the category I would define my work as fitting into.

Competitors Board

My competitors I have wrote in depth about in my research file, but by using a range of companies, from small home-run Etsy stores, to established companies with a store front, I found something in each that I wanted my designs to reflect too. Illustrate produces a range of styles and designs from a number of artists, most of which focus on animals, Etsy store Beverly Fisher Studios produces small products that I would like to design for too, and even has done some of the animals that I want to focus on, such as the red squirrel. Purrfectly Woofly is based on dogs, but I think the patterns work well, combining realistic colouring for the dogs and more contrasting bright colours around it, she also designs for exciting giftware products. Alice Caroline caught my eye because of bold patterns, she also produces a range of products, such as beauty and bathroom products, inspired by florals which I really like.

Reflective Final Statement

Overall I have enjoyed refining my work in this module, being given the time and chance to completely change parts of it was beneficial to my development and skills. With the short time frame at Christmas, I felt like my work was rushed and could have used more tutor input to improve it, which was made difficult due to illness. With the feedback I was given, I worked to improve every element of my work to a professional level.

My patterns were definitely a strong point in this module, I think I really pushed myself and managed to create a strong set of patterns, finally learning how to do a half drop and learning better to co-ordinate my colours and balance the colours throughout the collection. I also learnt more about scale throughout and put this to better use when thinking of my product mock ups.  My mock ups were also a good point, it can be very difficult to find the right images online, so I made my own paper products and fabric ones too so I could get the high quality images and be able to arrange and place them as much as I want, which definitely worked to my advantage, especially in a time where no one will see them as a real prototype.

I always think my markmaking can be more experimental, I try to expand my techniques every time but I struggle sometimes to carry on when I feel like I have created something right. I struggled with letting go of my old designs after the feedback, the motifs took hours to make each one and I was convinced I could make them work. Looking now at my designs before and after feedback, they have been so developed into something I am happy with, but I had to adapt my thinking and style to let that happen, which was hard to do.

My time management is usually something I am proud of, with my illness I did find it harder to keep on time of things, and then coronavirus caused issues in terms of living arrangements and suitable space to work in my house, but due to being stuck in the house, I found I was able to stick to my personal timetable better and got a lot done each day. I do wish I had set more time aside for stitching, as it is a process that I enjoy but did not feel like it was getting me anywhere towards an outcome, so I did not want to dedicate a lot of time to it. Had I had the opportunity, I would have liked to use the digital stitch machines perhaps over my patterns to see what I could have added to the finish of them for the mini fabric collection. Overall, I am happy with my outcomes and my digital skills in particular being built this module, and look forward to building my final module collection too. KX0tnj

Introduction to Exposure

I was so excited for the final module of my whole three-year degree, the freedom and the ability to just work on this one project, for months on end. You could imagine my disappointment when I became ill for a few months, and fell behind in my other modules, so had to make the decision to go part-time, and complete this module next year instead.

Coronavirus changed everything, I was already well-adapted to working at home when everyone else began to, and I found I made a lot of progress in my Consultancy module, in terms of learning how to design well and getting things ready well before the deadline. After some phonecalls and chats, it was decided that I could return to my full-time status, with an extension to get my final module done.

This was in itself a tough decision too, next year I would have more access to the studios and equipment, I enjoy digital stitch and have not really had a chance to use it this year either due to illness. I would also be able to take part in the show next year. I thought about what I would do after I finished this year, I wanted to move in with my boyfriend ideally, but would need to commute when January came then, and find somewhere to stay a couple of nights a week to reduce my travel time. When I accepted this part-time status, the idea of a post-graduate degree completely left my mind, doing an extra yer again may put my life plans on hold for even longer, so I feel like now I could graduate, have some time to try and develop my own business and possibly do a postgraduate the year after.

I have encountered some problems working from home already, including my workspace, a fight with my mother over her puzzle table resulted in my own table, which does fill up very quickly if I am switching between laptop work and painting. I am finding gaps in my supplies too, missing a couple of thread colours is normal but for this module, I want a full range of naturals and browns, so I have had to order these, so ordered some more colour scheme colours as well and some embroidery backing, I do not like using newspaper.

On the plus side, lockdown means I cannot see my boyfriend, or friends, the weather has been nice which has meant my family is spending a lot more time outdoors so I get some quiet as well. There are a lot of hours in the day and I spend a lot of them working, but enjoying it as well and just stopping for a little walk in the garden or some food when I feel like it. My sleeping pattern has got a little later lately, I always phone my boyfriend at ten every night and usually go to bed after this but I do not sleep early, so I end up waking up in the late morning, I think working on this will give me more of a normal working day, with more sunlight!

I plan to do a post every Sunday night planning the next week ahead, for now, the next week or so will be researching into the theme of endangered species in the UK and doing general customer, competitor and product research too, as well as editing my self-set brief and creating moodboards.
