Spoonflower Contest – Sports and Leisure

When I saw the name of this contest, I thought it was one that I might have to skip, as I do not like sports and I could not think of anything beyond different balls or rigid sporting equipment. Then I thought of swimming, which is kind of a sport and also leisurely as a lot of people do it for fun and exercise. The leisure part I think is important, it could be anything from walking a dog to doing yoga, leisure time covers a range of things.

I developed from swimming and thought of snorkelling under the water, where you could interact more with sealife and animals, so I decided to go with this, as it gave me a chance to think about a variety of underwater animals too.

I drew up some girls exploring underwater and used this to show the idea of someone doing the activity, I liked doing this as I do not do a huge amount of people and this gave me a chance to practice, by hiding the faces with their big goggles too, it was great. I surrounded them with sealife, and I think this gives it an interesting and busy look to it. I entered the large bottom one here into the contest.

I created a lot of coordinating designs to go along with this, which I will work on more and repeat to give a better idea of scale.

I created quite a large collection from this and I think I could probably still do more, I played with all the different motifs, experimenting with colourways and scale a lot throughout.

Updated Moodboards

My moodboards were something that let me down a little in consultancy, I was determined to try and make something different and more interesting than the average 9 image board. Very uniform and plain. I think I went way too far with shapes and combining different styles, so I took this back and instead made a simpler design but using different shapes and a square board.

It is hard to tell but the moodboards have a thick white border around them, so the square of images is more inset and I think this gives it a more interesting and purposeful look. The theme board and colour board were updated as I made a decision to add the blue into the colour scheme after I started designing, and from my tutorial with Suzanna a month or so ago she advised making some of my pictures of my theme board more ‘Instagrammable’, which is a odd term but completely makes sense with the aesthetic of Instagram, so making the images just more pleasing and attractive. I replaced the squirrel, hare and dormouse images to better quality, cuter images. On the colour board, I added in the blue into the colour scheme and also added a picture of the berries I had researched before into the board too to give it a more varied look.

I think these do reflect my theme better being quite cutesy in my designs and the colour scheme is a definite bonus to expand my collection and give it a more varied look between the mini-collections for each animal.
