I wanted to have a go at putting some of these products I was making onto the giftware and lifestyle products that fell into my category. I thought this would make me understand more about the scale of my patterns especially and mkaing sure that they work together well too.

I tried out some hair accessory mockups first, using some bits I had created in white fabrics. I tried this laid out first, and then also in more a situation being worn by a couple of girls. The scrunchies on her arm I think work well and work nicely together, and the hairband goes with them as well.

These products together look good I think, a good collection put together. The scrunchies I like here because they show the colourways of the hedgehog collection nicely together and then some of the other products show the secondaries well. I do not think I could put the hero on something quite this small, I think scrunchies need to relfect a bold colour or two and the heros may get too confusing, but I think they would work a lot better on anything bigger than this, such as notebooks and other desk stationery sets.

I think the stationery idea is good and I would like to see a few patterns used on these together. I also do like the idea of pens, pencils, pen holders, and then pencil cases could work as well. Similarly, the makeup bags and pouches could look really good too with the patterns on there.

I also tried a couple of cushion mockups, I think this could be quite effective as I think they would make a nice gift item which is what I am aiming for, although they would definitely be the biggest items I would be looking at, but would be perfect for showing the heroes.

Finally I wanted to try a blender design here as I thought it would be the part of my collection that could be suitable for fashion, I think my designs as a whole do fit more of this quirky giftware market and then could branch into interiors and stationery into that, but fashion is not something I considered too much. I think this does work though, easily with a matching scrunchie too it could be a good look.

I will continue to experiment with mockups of other gift products, even for just experimenting with my designs and see what I could expand to in the future. I plan on trying more stationery, as well as a mug and coaster set and some more makeup bags and accessories, which I plan on learning how to make to a professional level.

So after the fabric wrap experiments I thought that packaging could be a good way to go to raise awareness of the species I was studying, as I could use text and images a lot better than just a piece of fabric used to wrap the parcel.

I first tried lino printing, which is kind of rustic looking due to the disturbed printing of this one. Again I have trouble with the materials available, a better, flatter cardboard would have made a difference, as well as the quality of the paint as well and the lino tools. However this looked okay, so I thought about digital printing again to see how this would improve it.

I next tried a lettering print, using a small set of stamps. This made the facts that I wanted to appear on the boxes much more clear and definitely would raise awareness of the animals. I think this worked well, but also think it could have been tidied up digitally.

These worked quite nicely, and I think in a bold unsaturated print it looked good. The last one I think is my favourite, using both the patterns and getting the fact in there too. Obviously these could be changed depending on the product in the box.

The tags I think work well too and could be quite effective in getting the message across which I am quite happy about. I think the effect of showing visually is definitely more important, like the half tag, you want to read to find out why only half the tag was used. Or the little hedgehogs to show the population is obvious for the decline and is quite a bold image.

I spoke in my research and my previous raising awareness posts about my idea of including seeds in the shape of a tag that you could go hang out in the garden, feed birds, squirrels, whatever you might have in your area. This could raise awareness of the different foods each of these species like, or could be more tailored to just suit a range of creatures in the garden, such as birds, as it is still helping out in the ecosystem. Plus seeds can be put in trees for birds, anything at ground level could attract rats which is not wanted.

I did a little research and decided to try some mixtures using lard, suet, seeds and some blackberries left over from the natural dyeing.

I first tried just using lard, I started to mix it in and it started to bond together a little. I added a little more too as the actual seeds would not cut, so I had to make sure there was enough lard for this to work. The end result you can see here is the tag shape, however I do not think it would hold up, especially if I was to poke a hole through it to get the string I needed through there. Also in hot weather I imagine this would just melt and fall apart, which could be a problem if it was inside hot packaging.

I thought I would give suet a go, as I had seen suet blocks in the shops that didnt seem to melt down so easily, they came in these small pellets that I was able to crush and roll with a rolling pin, doing this on top of some mixed seeds and suet too worked to help blend and bind it together.

I thought this was going to work better, but actually it was falling apart quite badly and crumbling, I put it into the fridge but it did not help it too much, however the fat ball I made was quite good. I decided to put this outside with a camera to see what kind of animals would go after it.

I left this out for the night, I had a malfunction with the camera that it decided not to pick up night vision during the darkness hours, but I did manage a few early morning shots of some magpies, little robins and bluetits on it, before it disappeared completely, I suspect a hungry squirrel.

Finally I tried the blackberry one, as this is a food that hedgehogs and dormice enjoy, however it just did not hold, even after a day in the fridge it just did not harden up, and also being wet from the dyeing the berries could mean that it could go bad and mould the seeds quickly.

So overall, this did not really work too well for the function I wanted it for. Maybe instead the idea of including some seeds to be grown, plants that the animals enjoy particularly, would be a more achieveable idea. I also think I could look into little bags of hedgehog foods or even proper little snacks for outdoors if I wanted to follow through with this idea, leave the actual snack-making to companies that have done it for a long time! It was fun though to see what I could do, and none of it will go to waste with all the birds and squirrels in my garden.

The main aim of my self-set brief was to raise awareness of the species that I was inspired by for this collection, and their stories. I thought also promoting sustainability would be great for this reason, the idea of fabric wraps is interesting because it could be found fabrics, from charity shops etc. Finding fabrics and reusing them is much more sustainable than buying new, and I think the problem with digital fabric printing is that is has to be this new fabric bought from a company for them to print on, it is not something that you can do at home, or even Uni with the broken printer, or maybe found fabric could have been tried for use on that one.

So I think if it was the case that I have to use new fabrics for my products, at least I could think of sustainable uses for my packaging. A fabric wrap could also be a nice way to finish the parcel off, and another idea could be to maybe include instructions on how the person buying the product could then reuse the fabric wrap themselves, to make it into a little gift for themselves or something. I think this idea would only really work for products in a shop or something, anything sent in the post will be harder to do that with as it would definitely need some boxes or plastic to keep it safe.

I thought I would try out the fabric wrap idea anyway, as it could be a nice extra and useful if I ever got products into a shop. I thought about natural dyeing next, to customise the found fabrics. I found some chiffon type material and decided this could work well with its floaty nature. I looked into natural dyeing a bit, I looked back in my technical file as I have done this before, and found blackberry dye.

I put the blackberries on to boil and gently mashed them to bring the colour out of them, this was fairly instant and came out well in the water. I left it to simmer for about half an hour on the rayburn, which kept it at a good medium temperature.

I used a built in colander pot for this, and actually as the water boiled, the berries were breaking down more and more, so the little bits did start going through the gaps, I think I should have run it through a much smaller holed sieve or something to ensure these bits were removed as they did end up sticking on the fabrics.

I put a piece of the chiffon into the pink and left it overnight to really soak in, I also had a green Dylon dye from trying out some patterns before, so I put some in here as well and also left this overnight. I took the pink out the next day, probably left it for a good 14-16 hours as it was still looking quite light. I hung it on the line and as it dried I was surprised it actually got darker as it dried and looked really good.

I thought the final colour was actually really nice, it came out very even. I left the fabric in the green synthetic dye even longer and when I hung this out, all the colour just dropped out from it, so this was unsuccessful.

I next thought to make it more interesting I could try some tie-dyeing with this fabric and also some other found fabrics, even liners from curtains or spare bedding, it sometimes had interesting textures on it.

I left these in the dye overnight and decided to dry them out. I actually went away for the weekend at this point so they were left for a few days but they were properly dried out.

Oddly, the same chiffon fabric here did not hold the colour when it was put into a variety of tie dye ties. The other thicker fabric works well, it kept the colour and it also shows the tie dye effects, this does not show on the chiffon at all, as the colour just didnt come through. The plain dyed sample was great though so I thought I would try this to wrap up a few things.

So these worked out quite nicely here, and I think it could be a nice touch as a gifting service, but I do not think doing this to every product and then putting it in a box to send anyway is any good as it could just be a waste of fabric, unless it was used to make something that could perhaps help species in the garden. Although this leads into my idea about using bird seeds and other things to encourage life in the garden, and use it as an actual tag for the products, so this will definitely be something I experiment into next.

Overall, I think this was a good experiment and shows me what could and couldnt work in the future. As for raising awareness, it does not do much in terms of promoting the individual four animals that I am looking at, but promoting the idea of sustainable packaging and fabrics could be very useful. I think continuing to look into raising awareness through the packaging is something that could work well, so I will continue to explore that both physically and digitally.

I think it was the squirrel collection where I evolved this faded opaque placement design for a possible page or cover design, then the hare I developed the corner designs after talking to Keireine in a tutorial, then the hedgehog header finally which I still have not done yet.

So I had a go with the opaque examples here in green and yellow, the green has not turned out exactly how it should on my screen but has printed to a nice muted colour, I might revisit this for a better look but I would like this to be muted for a page, and maybe brighter for a front cover, so it is an interesting thing to experiment with. The corner designs I think are very cute, and I would love to make good use of these, I think they show the colours well and work well with the shape of the dormouse in both instants. I also tried a line drawing to try and do what I mentioned before on with the acetate paper, that will be a job to add to the list.

I changed up the colours of the squirrel placements, because I realised I had not used the yellow in any of the placements, and when I got to the hedgehog it was too late, it was the only collection that did not use the yellow as per my idea with the colour scheme distribution. So I changed this one to yellow, and I think with the blue it works really well and the placements of the animals is cute and graphic I think.

These were the ones missing for the hare, again here I think the green is quite hard to see on the screen so I need to look into this. The line drawing does look good however.

Next, I think doing the headers will be a good step to completing the collection so I can critique it myself and hopefully get some feedback as well.

I have spent the last day or two working on my patterns and placements for the hedgehog collection which I think has been coming together nicely with some nice ideas.

I started off with the hero design, using the hedgehog in a couple of cute poses and creating a full block repeat to start with, to get the feeling of the motifs and what else I wanted to add into it.

I think the green background worked the best here, maybe because the green motifs are dark and the pink and even some of the blue ones are a little lighter so it would fade into the background a little. I do like this though and think putting it into a half drop repeat will help it flow better as I have done with some of the others.

The difference between the half drop and the full drop interests me because it does give the pattern a totally different flow to it. I really like the way it half drops and maybe I could have spread out the hedgehogs and motifs a little more but I did not want to have a very small scale repeat. I like here that I can see all the hedgehogs and the motifs in a small surface area, which definitely would suit the small items I want to put this pattern on, like a makeup bag, pencil case, or at largest, a cushion.

I applied the kind of formula that I have adopted to a few different placements ideas I have had, I think ideally I would like to see a different placement with each little collection, and like colourways, I can show that these options are available with the other species and can work for each one. I particularly like the bold centre placement, I also like the corner placements a lot and I think these will work really well on notebooks, paper, I could even try it on some squarer fabric objects such as corners of pouches and bags, I think getting to the point where I can start playing around with mockups would be really useful for this kind of idea to see what the various things suit well.

The opaque kind of images I thought could be little corner placements on notebook paper or something like that, which again I think I can test it out well with mockups to see how well this works. My plan for the line drawings is to try and print them on see-through paper, but I do need to see how it works because I only have access to one printer right now so if it is the wrong type this will not work. I suppose I could try tracing it with a sharpie directly onto the see-through paper, I’ll call that Plan B.

I wanted to try and do a new type of placement image, so I thought about this long header idea, which could work on a number of things, such as pages and notebooks, and along a long pouch or pencil case, or even a long cushion. I tried it kind of organically first in the rough shape I wanted, but then actually tried a symmetrical design which I think looks better and shows the two hedgehogs coming together to meet which I think is cute. I would then like to try this with the other three animals, I have some poses in mind that would work for the others I think.

These designs show some secondaries and blenders I created from the original design, I like a number of these and I think they work well with some colourways, and others (like the oak) I thought would be better due to the similar shapes working in other collections but I just dont like the rigid way that it sits.

I think my favourites have to be the hedgehog design in this lot, and the sycamore leaves on the white background, both the secondary and the blender designs.

I tried a berry design with all three colours used quite evenly, I think these look quite dynamic in shape but I do not think the overall look is quite what I wanted it to be, so I decided to try dropping a colour and each time just focus on two colours to see the effects of this a little better.

I reduced the colour first but just having a little blue in the tile with the berries that had majorly green or pink leaves on it, I think this still looked a little busy whether it was all tossed closely or more sparse. I then cut out the colours completely and just use the same few motifs to create a tossed repeat with the green and pink leaves and a more linear repeat with the blue leaves, which I think need a rotation or a half drop or something to make it look more exciting because it is an uneven shape and just seems heavy to the one side.

I like the dark green leaves particularly and I think it works well on the pink background, I would say it is probably my favourite out of the lot but I think if I can make something better for a secondary I would have this one as a backup rather than one I am certain I will use.

The blue foliage ones here look good, I think the repeat is nice this could work on a small or large scale. I tried it on a few different shades and I particularly like the light pink and the dark blue, I like dark colours and I would like to experiment with this further. I think a lot of my designs I have tried it on briefly but something just did not look right, but if I lightened up my actual motifs to give that contrast that could be quite an interesting little collection from my main collection in itself.

I think my favourite green is the pink background but I think it does work on the blue as well, the pink is interesting because I think the light green, blue and the dark blue works really well. I would say that my dark blue one here is more interesting to me because it jumps out as different which I do like.

I tried a new style of pattern by making these circular kind of designs first using the leaf motifs and creating a repeat out of this, I like this but I might look at doing it in some other colourways too. I produced the usual dots designs that I have done throughout, so there is a huge number of colours for this design with a lot of different colour combinations which I really like for options. I also tried some designs that show some small flowers first evenly and then more randomly, I think these both look okay but not my favourite blenders. I then went more into using foliage and trying to create more of a stripe to it which I like, the shapes formed with it naturally look good, with the green one I think the less striped one looks better to give it some negative space. I prefer the blue foliage stripes with the dots as I think they work on both the pink and the white backgrounds. Finally the linear leaves were done in a kind of brick pattern in the way I positioned them, and again I like the white and the pink going with the blue well, so I think I have some decisions to make but I have an idea of what I want to show in my collection.

I think the hedgehog board altogether comes out with a strong colour balance between backgrounds and complimenting colours, I carried the white, green and pink backgrounds throughout it, although I might look at a green background in the blenders as there are three pink. I think the top leaf design might look better with pink leaves on the green background so I will definitely give this a go instead. I like the hero design and I showed the more even repeat with that too, and the little header placement that I think I could show examples of with all the other species too.

I think now the next thing is to fill in some gaps in the collection, like doing the corner designs for the dormouse and squirrel, and maybe trying the header design for the other three too, then I can have a proper look at it and see what I want to improve with it. I think the good thing about printing out all my patterns and covering a plasterboard is that I spend a lot of time glancing at them and have noticed little things I do not like already.

After my tutorial with Keireine yesterday, I thought it was a good time for a check-in and to see where I feel like I am at. Keireine did raise looking closely at the brief to ensure that I am hitting points, and this seemed like a good place to start last night after I finished the hare collection. I am planning on going house-hunting tomorrow too so just reviewing and making an action plan for the week next week will be a good fresh start.

So the brief gives the main points we are required to do, including a written document which explains the rationale behind your work with a critical evaluation.

Rationale – a set of reasons or a logical basis for a course of action or belief. (oxford languages definition)

Critical Evaluation – To ‘critically evaluate‘, you must provide your opinion or verdict on whether an argument, or set of research findings, is accurate. This should be done in as critical a manner as possible. Provide your opinion on the extent to which a statement or research finding is true. (Oxbridgeessays.com)

I think understand exactly what is being asked is a key point to this, so my written document should explain my reasons for taking some of the key decisions in my work to reach that final point, comparing this to what I had set out to do in the beginning and whether this had been met, being critical of every decision along the way.

The three main points (no longer 4 with the group publicity campaign scrapped due to covid) are:

– the production of a substantial design collection arising from your own self set brief and timetable (Meaning that your own response to your own brief will be looked at, so if aims are not met this could be a downfall as these were aims written by myself to undertake)

– presentation of that work including viva, sketchbooks, technical files, samples (Making a note here that I would like to add my mockup creations into my technical file as I get to that stage)

-the generation of a final professional exhibition/professional practice (translating due to covid to professional presentation of my work, for which I have prepared a website for, and am continuing to promote my own work on my Instagram and LinkedIn)

I also looked at the learning outcomes, and wanted to make sure I was hitting some points in these and what I could do to improve on this:

– The establishment of refined aesthetic judgement – for me this was adding dots and textures to my work which are quite on trend now and give my work a modern element, also making colour decisions, like adding in that blue late to create a collection that had some difference within it across the four mini-collections. Definitely need to work on editing and trying to look past my personal tastes to something that could be commercially viable, while sticking to my style.

– Communication skills – I think this has got me more practised with blog writing and also learning how to better practice captioning on my Instagram to increase engagement and become more confident with myself in this way. Maybe work on communication of my morals and messages through my patterns and things too, especially since it is a theme that means a lot to me and has an environmental side of it.

– Extensive body of research – I think I covered this well, I enjoy researching and I covered a range of topics, this can always be expanded on, and I plan to carry out more research as I carry on with my work.

– Contemporary culture – Looking at designs for on trend products, such as hair bands and scrunchies, and also looking at colour trends too. I think I could definitely try and push this further by researching some new emerging products that I could design for.

–Establish highly creative, innovative and dynamic ideas – I stared at this line for a long time, I have always enjoyed my idea of going further than just ‘animals’ to endangered ones, to endangered woodlands animals that have a personal link to me, but I am not sure I would describe these as innovative. I will describe some further ideas I have had that I need to spend some time looking into when I start talking about my own brief, and I thought about some innovative ideas to meet some of my objectives better.

– Demonstrate a personal and ambitious vision for public display – This relates more to before covid obviously, but I would really love to make a little mock up of a desk with some products on there. My problem is that I live in an old house, with coloured walls, dark rooms and cluttered corners, so I may not be able to get professional clean images, but I will definitely try my best and try and work through any problems I experience here.

I looked at some of the helpful considerations later on in the brief, and I think answering some of these will help me to evaluate my self-set brief and how I can better respond to it.

What kind of abilities do I wish to demonstrate?

I want to demonstrate my evolving pattern creation abilities definitely, taking part in the Spoonflower contests have got me really understanding more about scale and repeats and colour balance, which I think have definitely worked out well and helped me a lot, so I was actually very excited to get to the point of pattern making for my final collection. I did not want to lose my realism in my work, in consultancy to make pattern I decided to go really graphic and simple with my designs, focusing on colour to avoid using my patternwork motifs that would not have a lot of colour onto them. At this point I did not have a great deal of confidence in my pattern abilities, but they were getting better and better. I did feel a little like I was losing myself in this new style, but throughout this module I have been adapting, adding more of my realism into my work and enjoying it. The adaptation of my realism into digital work is something I wanted to demonstrate too, as I think it is important to show I am keeping my style going.

Am I interested in a particular topic or issue?

The endangered animals was a huge part of this module for me, living in a rural area I have always been interested in animals but I think living in Cardiff for the majority of three years had made me lose some appreciation for the countryside a little, so getting back here for lockdown has been quite nice to get me reinspired by the species that I like to see here and the habitats that they live in. I think endangered animals are an important issue that people do care about, and if something as simple as buying a product was to be a helpful little push for a species then I think people would be more likely to be engaged with it, so coming up with some innovative ways to raise awareness is important.

Are the resources available and do I have the skills to produce work to the quality required?

At home I have had some limitations with my resources, I enjoy using the traditional darkroom materials in my work and I have found this hard to produce any kind of similar results to this although I have tried. Even something as simple as lino printing was hard because I cannot afford to spend a great deal of money on the equipment, so I did what I could with my materials, but it was clear I would not be able to take this much further. In terms of digital design, I have been working on my Skillshare classes to get the best out of Procreate designs and then my pattern making skills as well. So I am confident now that I have the ability to create designs and patterns that are up to the standard that I want to be able to. I use Photoshop to create my patterns, I do have some experience with illustrator and designing on it, I have tried patterns but found it harder and also my laptop seems to get a lot slower with using illustrator too. I think I will work on learning illustrator through Skillshare at the moment, and then maybe when I get a new laptop at some point I can put this into better practice. I think I have good enough photography skills that I can use to create my own mockup images, and also construction skills to actually make the products in the first place. I hate using mockup images found online, they are often very poor quality if they are free and I just like being able to create little collections in my images and position things the way that I want to. This worked great for my giftwrap collection images in Consultancy, so I would be keen to do this again with more ambitious products, and if I can continue to make them I could print off my fabric and make good use of it creating these products. I suppose the part I think I need to work on and experiment with is the in-situ kind of mock ups, as I think a lot of setup would be required to try and get a crisp clean image, it might mean building a setup with some old plasterboards and doing it up like a little exhibition space.

Self-Set Brief

I wrote my self-set brief way back in January, this was when I thought I was going to be doing the module, but due to illness I was not able to start it at that point, but it was there ready and waiting for what I thought was going to be next year. I was surprised when I first looked at it again at how much I had to change, I think I was being unrealistic at that point in my aims and objectives in the timeframe, so this was the first thing I tackled, and the thing that I want to evaluate now and see what I need to do.

So my first section was an overall aim of the brief and textiles collection, where I state the aim of the collection was to raise awareness of endangered species in the UK. Raising awareness primarily means to spread knowledge of the issue and cause, and for animals I think ways to help out is an excellent source of knowledge to spread, so at this point I sat down and just thought about what I could do, and actually came up with some interesting ideas.

– After doing the hare design as a corner border placement, I thought about this in the bottom left, another pretty one in the top right, and some graphic placement to create a list of information in the middle of the page then. So for hedgehogs, it would be ‘check your bonfires, buy us food, leave out water’, a fun little way to show the various ways you could help, which I gathered information for when looking at the charities and interviewing National Trust.

-Adding facts and project links to my Instagram posts and Pinterest pins, informing people mostly my own age.

-Creating tags with facts and statements on them, where a simple fact about the animal, its habitat, its decline, and then a website for a charity or information about conservation projects could raise awareness. I was not even aware of red squirrel work so close to me, so I think this is something that people tend to miss out on in the fast-paced world, learning about your local conservation is actually very interesting. I also thought about adding custom kind of facts that relate to the patterns, like ‘There are 300 dots in this pattern, this is how many acres of woodland are removed each month’, or ‘There’s 40 leaves here on this pencil case, this is how many million hares are left in the UK, this may seem like a lot, but three years ago it was this’. Obviously figures and facts need to be current and checked, I made up those two on the spot but I can see the idea working, its just controlling how many leaves/dots etc are on each product that would be difficult, as if I was making these for real I would not be using the exact same bit of pattern each time. I think this idea creates a visual impact however which I think works well for awareness.

In terms of tags, I thought about innovation, what could I do completely out of the box that relates to this project, what if when the products were delivered, the tag could be put in the garden for a hedgehog, mouse or bird to eat? I brainstormed this idea for a while because it would need to be something that I could write or print on, unless I made use of some stickers or something instead. I thought about the idea of adding seeds with the tags, you could then plant them. Also thinking about the boxes, could you then use them as little planters? This promotes the idea of growing and encouraging a garden friendly to animals and species, like including seeds that were particularly good plants for some of these endangered species.

Another idea I developed to was creating a tag out of seeds somehow, so I need to research into this, so you could hang it out in the garden for the birds, while not targeting exact species, it is still helping animals in the garden and a fun little gift to have with the products that make me unique and memorable. I think I will have a go at seeing what I could do with this, using different seeds and substrates to create the tag shape, then I think I would have to package it and add a sticker to the outside of that instead.

Going back to the brief, I think overall I have met my objectives, I made a few little notes about improvements I could make overall to meet a point better, like the points I made about my research trips. I had planned to go to Skomer island which is famous for puffins, as this was a potential animal I was going to look into but due to travel restrictions this could not happen. I also considered Folly Farm, just to see a variety of animals and behaviours and habitats, however again due to lockdown going on much longer than I really thought, I could not do this either. I did compromise on this with the widlife camera in the garden, which allowed me to learna lot more about animals and their night time activity and habits in my very own garden. I made a note that I need to properly write up the responses that I got back from doing National Trust surveys, I thought this would be easier than it was, but because a lot of staff were furloughed they were no longer able to help with work-related questions like the ones I was asking.

An objective I had was to work out a suitable colour scheme to cover the range of species I want to focus on, this was when I had a lot of species and ideas in my head, which expanded from woodland, to the coast, to the skies and seas, so trying to find a colour scheme to cover all of this was going to be hard. However when I decided on woodlands I built my colour scheme, and then made that decision to add the blue into it which gave quite an interesting difference between the four mini-collections planned.

I also wanted to explore drawing and mark-making thoroughly, which I think I did a lot better on than previous years here. Again being home in lockdown was good in the way that I had all day to work on things with less responsibilities and distractions, and if I liked a technique I worked on adapting it and taking it as far as I could, sometimes all the way to fabrics.

I then went through my proposal and found some points I made that I wanted to cover that I had probably forgotten about:

Exploring adding stitch to final designs – I tried this with some animal digital prints but I think I could definitely try this better with the actual patterns, and see whether adding some texture and stitch into them improve them, experiment with it as I said. I also wanted to try foiling and embossing again, I need to carry on researching if I can do foiling at home on paper products, and embossing I would like to order some gold and pink powder to go alone better with the colour scheme.

In terms of research, I think I hit a lot of points that I wanted to, including videos and sounds from angles that the animal would see, but exploring this at night when a lot of the animals prefer to be out is definitely on the to-do list. I also noted that I could have made better use of the library resources online but I think the range of wildlife books that I found at home were useful helping me to identify different plants and some birds that I was catching on the wildlife camera.

In terms of Publicity, I noted that I wanted to use social media to promote my work as it develops, my Instagram has been used and I have gained followers and engagement as I have been posting regularly. I also post my work on LinkedIn and use this to apply for jobs and roles too, I am achieving more reach on this too which is great to see. I stated that I wanted to show my collection to chairites etc, and with them on furlough this may need to be a future plan. My boyfriend has contacts in the National Trust and could help me reach out to local locations. I also lan to research into local craft fairs and shops, research which ones could be best for me and find what I want to do, this could apply to professional practice as well.

Finally, my timetable is up to date at the moment, I did not print my business cards when I wanted to because I wanted to show them to a tutor again, but I would like to just get them printed now and I am happy with the design. I also have not done the personal statement for my presspack yet, it seems like something I should be doing with more for of the collection completed and more of my awareness ideas explored.

I completed the hero design as a full drop previously and the large placement piece that goes along with all of the different sets, I have now completed a corner placement design for the hare and half dropped the hero to make it more interesting and harder to see the repeat. I have also then created a range of patterns from the hero using the colour scheme and the motifs.

Today I had a tutorial with Keireine who asked about border designs, which I had started with a blender kind of design with the dots which I had made so it could run along the edge of a notebook page or something like that, I liked this design but Keireine mentioned a corner kind of design that would graphically show my motifs. I thought this hare would be great for this and I really like the results, it has now got me thinking about one of these for each animal, and maybe coming up with two more styles of placement I could try to have a different style of placement demonstrated for each collection, but only showing one of each in the final line up. This would demonstrate what I can do and what I can do differently, and showing on my blog how it translates over to the different animals and colours.

The hero half drop is effective I think in making it harder to see the repeat. I find when the motifs are made larger and smaller, it is easy to find the repeat with the larger motifs being more obvious. I like the blue in the background of this one, I think it works effectively with the motifs and the pale brown of the hare acts as a good colour balance.

The secondary designs here came from the hero and using the motifs in designs including different levels of colour balance and a clearer repeat with the animals which I think I could see quite nicely on a small fabric pouch or makeup bag. I am finding again with these colours that the designs on the white background do look effective and stand out well from the background and I think give it a modern touch.

I tried some more mushroom designs as I think these went well for the dormouse. I think these did work out well and I actually think I will use the blue mushrooms on the green background as a blender as is it quite graphic and bold even in its small scale.

The dots have been a good staple component throughout my collection, so I did some more of these. As these are so similar to the other two, I think these could all be grouped together as colourways of the one dot design, which allows for other blenders to take the place of these then. So I realised that the larger dot designs are effective and I did try these in the last collection, so I added this to a favourite for the actual collection from the hare here. I like the leaves too as these are simple and linear, I tried the small scale designs which I think are nice but I am not sure I love it, maybe I could try a more sparse and repeated tossed design. Leaving some good negative space could be effective as a blender because a lot of my collection is so busy.

So this is the board I have put together for now, showing both placements but considering this could change I think it would be quite effective to show more of a variety of placement designs, including maybe a faded watermark style placement that could be on a notebook page or something, or maybe even a different substrate like a see through phone case with a faint linear design on it and maybe a header or footer kind of placement that would suit a page, a book cover or a print. I definitely need to try out ideas like this, fully exploring what works and what doesn’t.

I started the hare collection today with the hero design and a placement of the hare as I had done with the dormouse and the red squirrel, this time using the combination of green, blue and yellow, leaving out the pink in this mini collection.

I think the blue background in this one works really well, I printed this too and it comes out as a good strong colour with the other motifs being really visible. I liked the contrast between the pale yellowy hares and a few of the mushrooms, with the rest of the blue and green designs. Blue is a funny colour because it isn’t the first colour I would think of with a natural palette but I think it does work with the leaves and mushrooms. I like the placement design too, I think the faded dots add a little something to it, not to have it completely white as I am thinking this for the front of a notebook or something like that.

I now plan on creating secondaries and blenders from this, and also wondering about some border designs and seeing what I could do with something like that looking at the products that I want to design for.
